An Generosity of People We Don't Know: The Way a Person I Barely Knew Supported Me Obtain the Role That Altered My Path

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to Europe with a travel partner. Because my friend was considering enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had planned a two-week stay there en route to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a large multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side known as International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the dining hall, where we got some food, took a seat, and started talking to other diners.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at an Ivy League institution. He asked me what I my profession was, and I explained that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He noted that there was an microscopy facility at Columbia University – adjacent to the engineering department, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I should apply for a position with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

The next day I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that night. The Iraqi student approached me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had made the arrangement, I went to the meeting – but right away told my host that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a place where everything seems achievable – she declared: “We can make that happen. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his name, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I lacked the bravery or self-belief to reach out at an elite institution and seek a position. And, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

What's more, that gig at Columbia paved the way for a job in Zurich where I got to know my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. That encounter altered everything. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
