Cars in Germany's Town Found Covered with Swastikas in Blood, Police Report

Incident location Affected vehicle Area Law Enforcement
Police stated they were notified by a resident who discovered a car in Hanau smeared with reddish liquid

Around 50 cars have been covered with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.

Police report they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.

The fluid had been applied in the form of a swastika, they stated.

Officers then found numerous other marked cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.

Police report early analysis show the fluid was likely human blood.

"There is still no clue as to its origin; officials are currently not aware of any injuries in association with the occurrence," they commented.

City officials announced they were trying "to resolve the incident" and have requested to the community for tips.

A high-ranking official said the incident left him without words and had to be solved promptly.

"This event hits the core of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, recalling the death of nine individuals by a gunman targeting people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
