A recent study suggests that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these drugs must be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Experts suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is greater among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
