The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.
The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.
Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.
Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, not only his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.
"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Injury History
Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.
The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.
The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.
Alternative Arrangements
In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.
The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.
He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."
"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
