Some experts stated the demand for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising price of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Legal Position and Implementation

Selling retatrutide on social media or Telegram is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed drug that must not be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some influencers try to sidestep the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but advertising and distribution can still breach pharmaceutical, marketing, and customer regulations, potentially leading to penalties, prosecution or prison.

Platform Reaction and Material Elimination

Based on TikTok, the platform has taken down problematic content and banned associated keywords and search suggestions. The organization stated it was committed to keeping the platform secure and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Online Trading Operations

Investigations also found communities with up to nine thousand members marketing the experimental drug using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which functions like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with thousands of users, populated with images of slimming results, glowing reviews and step-by-step instructions for mixing or injecting at residence.

Within minutes of entering one group, a seller shared contact information, where most purchases occur. The seller sent an instruction manual and guaranteed delivery within two days. When questioned how much time a injector should be used, sellers give contradictory answers varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Platform Oversight and Security Measures

A spokesperson for Telegram stated it regularly moderated dangerous content on its service including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Expert Cautions

“People are injecting materials they can’t verify. Even if the science behind this drug is sound, these online products may not contain what they advertise,” stated Jason Murphy, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

A medical professional of an online medical service linked the increase in demand to recent price rises for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, individuals are turning to social media. But counterfeit treatments are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the environment they were made in was sterile,” she said.

Her staff has already seen individuals harmed by self-injection from unverified suppliers. “We understand the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or communication platforms is taking chances with your well-being,” said the doctor. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

Producer Statement

A representative from Eli Lilly said the substance was in phase 3 research studies and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this point no one can sell [it] for human use,” they said, adding that any item “falsely representing itself as a Lilly experimental substance not yet authorized … may subject patients to potentially significant health risks”.
